If you hadn’t noticed I haven’t been writing much on the blog lately and for that I apologize. The universe was against me for the last few weeks. It started with two of my coworkers being out on vacation for the same two week period. There are only 5 of us in the studio so when 2 are gone it can make a pretty large hole in the workforce. And of course everything was due and I needed to take half a day off to attend my stepson’s 8th grade graduation. Needless to say I spent a lot of time at work and when I got home there was no way I wanted to spend more time on the computer.
Then several weeks ago my upper back had started bothering me. The upper back is pretty strong so it’s not a common place to have pain. I figured I had just pulled a muscle and would take it easy and let it resolve itself. I didn’t want to go to the doctor because I knew she would just tell me to keep moving and take some Mortrin to deal with pain – because that’s exactly what they told me when I sprained my back. I had this nagging feeling that it wasn’t a pulled muscle though because I could pinpoint exactly where the pain was coming from – just to the right of my spine by the shoulder blade. Even though I was suspicious I still waited, hoping it would get better but it didn’t. It got worse. A lot worse. I was now trying to sleep on the couch. Deep breaths, sneezing, coughing and yawning were excruciating. This past Thursday I couldn’t take it any longer. I still didn’t want to go to the doctor because I just didn’t feel confident that she would actually help me. Instead I chose a chiropractor. I had never gone to a chiropractor before so I was a little nervous, but Dr. Mark knew exactly what was wrong and he fixed it. I had a rib out of place, which I’m sure happened doing farm chores, specifically moving goat kids – squirmy little buggers they are. I was definitely sore for a few days after but today I’m almost 100% so I’m back to writing again.
Even though I haven’t been writing I’ve got some great ideas for upcoming content. We’ve got some exciting projects coming up too. We’ll be turning an old dresser into nest boxes and storage and we will finally be building our greenhouse out of old windows. I’ll be writing about my shampoo bar soap recipe, my new favorite homemade deodorant, my quest for garden tools that will stand up to our abuse and some great book reviews including a garden makeover inspired by one! We’ve also got some news about our bee hives and we’ve got our first set of DIF chicks on the way. Speaking of chicks, we’re also going to be teaching a FREE chicken class on July 28th at Loma Vista Farm and then we’ll be teaching an advanced chicken class in October at Biofuel Oasis in Berkeley.

I’ve went to a chiropractor since I was a child. My children went very young and still go. I have very flexible joints, hypermobility, I think, and as a result don’t easily break bones but get out of place frequently. Ribs getting out are very common for me esp. when I do physical things I shouldn’t. I will go there before a medical doc. for minor irritating things. Cheaper and MUCH healthier. Glad you’re better now. If it happens again don’t wait so long so you have to suffer so badly. Yea for chiroprators. been going to the same one for over 23 yrs. now and I’m 50.
Rachel – I’d be interested if you have any experience or comments on urban homesteaders raising quail for eggs and meat production. My unenlightended City made me get rid of my chickens, but I may have found a loophole with quail.
It’s nice to have you back!!! Speaking of backs…I’m glad you chose the natural route and found a good chiropractor. I work with an amazing chiro (my hubby) and he treats babies up to 96 (our oldest patient). It works!
